Musician/composer Sytze Pruiksma and famed trumpet player Eric Vloeimans will be supported by musicians from dozens of marching bands and 20 dancers and actors from Noord Nederlands Toneel and Club Guy & Roni. The production is directed by Guy Weizman. Falk Richter wrote the text for “Conference of the Birds”, which is an adaptation of an epic Persian poem of the same name. Mirjam Stolwijk and Mariana Aparicio Torres will play the lead roles. “Conference of the Birds” is presented by Kening fan ‘e Greide. “Conference of the Birds” is an impressive theatre, dance and musical performance at De Groene Ster recreational area. Surrounded by greenery and water ways at dusk, audience members will be swept away by the story of a group of birds in search of a leader. After a long, adventure-filled journey, the birds realise that they are in charge of their own destiny. “Conference of the Birds” is one of the most eye-catching events of the summer during the Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 European Capital of Culture.
Conference of the Birds
This spectacular musical and theatrical production is based on a 12th century Persian poem, “The Conference of the Birds”, which tells the story of how the birds of the world come together. The performance also addresses the dwindling biodiversity of the Frisian landscape with industrial-scale agriculture. Mankind is responsible for both our own living environment and the natural world. Just as birds can only survive their epic migrations by sticking together, humans are also dependent upon one another. The Frisian

The production is a Mienskip project thanks to the participation of (primarily) Frisian marching bands. Similar to bird populations, the number of musicians joining these traditional marching bands is also in decline. We think that is a real shame, which is why a portion of the proceeds from the ticket sales for “Conference of the Birds” will go to the participating bands.
De Groene Ster in Leeuwarden is a beautiful recreational area that offers both relaxation and entertainment, and a massive bird’s nest will emerge on the grounds this summer. This nest is the arena where the musicians, actors and dancers will bring “Conference of the Birds” to life. The lush, green surroundings amplify the sense of being lost in nature which the performance evokes. It would be difficult to imagine a more suitable setting for a show about birds, freedom, beauty and nature.
